I Threw My 6-Year-Old a Pokémon Disco Party — Here Are the DIYs You Can Steal
<———— THE INSPO
Here is what I imagined for the decor/dancefloor!
When Max told me he wanted a Pokémon birthday party for his 6th birthday, naturally my brain heard:
Pokémon… but make it disco. 🪩⚡️
And thus, the POKÉ BALL was born.
I wanted the party to feel like Pokémon without just ordering a bunch of character decorations and calling it a day. Think Poké Balls + disco balls, bright red, graphic black and white, a dance floor in our backyard, and a whole lot of DIY-ing that absolutely did not need to happen…but I am who I am.
The good news is: you do not have to make everything from scratch because I already did it for you.
I turned three of my favorite DIYs from the party into editable Canva templates so you can customize them for your own little trainer.
THE POKÉ BALL PARTY 🪩
Our whole concept was basically:
What if a Poké Ball and a disco ball had a baby?
We called the party POKÉ BALL, hired a DJ, turned our backyard into a tiny dance party, and mixed classic Pokémon graphics with disco details everywhere we could.
It was colorful, ridiculous, slightly over-the-top and VERY Max.
DIY #1: The Welcome Sign
This was one of those things I made for the party because I couldn't find exactly what I wanted online.
So I made it myself.
And now you don't have to. 😂
The Canva version is completely editable, so you can swap in your kid's name, birthday details, colors or whatever else you want to customize.
DIY #2: What’s Your Disco Name?!
This one might have been my favorite. Everyone loves a good party name! This was fun for the adults too!!!
I've included the editable version in the free template bundle below.
DIY #3: Pin the Disco Ball on the Poke Ball
THE SETUP:
A cardboard homemade PokeBall
A instruction sign
A black ribbon for the blindfold
Mini Disco Balls
Sticky tack and sharpies
I wanted a crafty game for the kids, something that was completely original! I made the Poke Ball from cardboard with acrylic paint and the rest of the supplies I ordered on Amazon! I didn’t have time to make a template for this one, but you can make your own and copy my instructions! The winners got packs of Pokémon Cards!
THE RESULT:
A fun game for parents to play with kids when they need a break from dancing :)
DIY #4: The Beverages
The final template is the bar menu! I had my husband make craft cocktails and we gave them cute names to go with the theme!
DIY #5: The Disco Ball Cake Pops
🪩 Disco Ball Cake Pops
You’ll need:
1 baked 9×13 cake, about ½ cup frosting, white candy melts, cake-pop sticks, silver edible luster dust or edible metallic spray, silver sanding sugar, and silver sugar pearls/nonpareils.
How to make them: Crumble the completely cooled cake into a big bowl until it looks like fine crumbs. Add frosting a little at a time and mix with your hands until the mixture holds together when you squeeze it—you want Play-Doh texture, not wet or sticky.
Roll into roughly 1-inch balls and chill for about 20–30 minutes. Melt a small amount of the candy melts, dip the tip of each cake-pop stick into the melted coating, then push it halfway into a cake ball. Chill again for 10 minutes so the sticks are secure.
Melt the remaining candy melts according to the package directions. Dip each cake pop completely, gently tap off the excess, then immediately sprinkle with the silver sugar and pearls while the coating is still wet. Stand upright in a cake-pop stand or block of Styrofoam to set.
Once they’re completely dry, finish them with edible silver luster dust or metallic spray to give everything that mirrored disco-ball look.
✨ The trick: Don’t use too much frosting! Start with about ⅓ cup and only add more if the cake won’t hold together. Too much frosting makes the pops heavy, mushy, and much more likely to slide off the sticks or crack.
WANT TO STEAL MY TEMPLATES?
Please do. That is literally why I'm putting them here.
I packaged up all three editable Canva templates from Max's Pokémon party so you can make your own versions without spending three nights moving things two pixels to the left like I did. 😂
Drop your email below and I'll send all three straight to your inbox.
